< and >, e.g. the file name
translates to<~.prog>before_fast_scan.gra
/home/user/prog/before_fast_scan.graon Unix hosts.

online_dir:exp_ini.exp
ONLINE determines the online_dir by looking at the environment variable ONLINE_DIR. If that has not been defined, it searches for /online_dir. This link can be thought of as the system default, whereas the environment variable is needed to setup a test environment.
Notice that these regulations become obsolete, if you are using the Spectra-Perl interface.
